A Day With The Halbachs

We have known this family for over three years now.  What a tremendous Blessing they are !! ;) IMG_0868

We are thankful that God has placed families that we have so much in commmon with !!! The Lord in moving in our church in a wonderful way. We are blessed with a great fellowship. We spent some time with one of these families last week. It was a time to grow in love toward one another. While we all ate taco salad, {words cannot describe how much our family enjoys the spicy, crunchy, lovely taste taco salad brings to us} we enjoyed the funny stories people shared, became sober as we were challenged in Christ, and felt much at rest with the warm inviting ways this family has!! :)

The walk we had took from 2:00 to 4:45″ish.” What a TIME we had!! ;) Smiling at Chloe and how she included all the little girls in hunts for flowers, thinking warm thoughts, looking at the way my wonderful parents had such good fellowship with the Halbach’s wonderful parents, :) We laughed as the Halbach and Johnson men tried to jump over the “water- road- block” in the middle of the path. I sobered up again as I saw Meg kindly listening to her little brother {as he looked up at her with total love and trust} and watched as she stooped down to carry him when his little legs got tired. I watched with interest as the men pointed out a huge tree we and tried to get their arms around it. I Laughed,(YET AGAIN)at the picture that I was ,FINALLY, able to get of the three young men {Micah,James, and Jordon.} They just couldn’t stay still and serious for a second so that I could push a small silver button!! Talk about patience! {WEll, o.k., I did get impatient with them!!!!} IMG_0847 IMG_0848 IMG_0849 IMG_0850 IMG_0851 IMG_0853 IMG_0854 IMG_0855 IMG_0856 IMG_0857 IMG_0858 IMG_0859 IMG_0860 IMG_0861 IMG_0862 IMG_0863 IMG_0864 IMG_0866 IMG_0867Unfortunately, I didn’t take “out-take” pictures of them throughout that time, because that wasn’t the final intent, though that would have been funny!!! I Marveled at the watchful eyes of James, who gave us the privilege of seeing Mommy’s & the families’ favorite bird!!! {The couple was camera shy and wouldn’t stay still!!} But, the memory will stay with us!! Then, at a place in the woods we or they were kind enough to stop and pose, we all tried to push ,or hold up a solid stone wall {one of the abuttments that was meant to be a railroad passage from Alexandria to Manassas but was never finished in the 1850′s because they ran out of money. Now it stands as a historical monument with another one on the other side of Cub Run Creek}.

Back home we enjoyed a delicious chessecake and more fellowship, So in the end….. What a memorable and blessed afternoon ! Thank you, Halbachs for the fellowship we had with you all! The time was well spent getting to know you all better.

GOD BLESS YOUR FAMILY!!

Livin’ in the country

Wow!  It’s been a while since we’ve done a post!  (The typist must have been on vacation or something )!  Anyways, the week of September the 6th to September the 13th we were livin’ in the country! (or watching the Wilkes Farm while the Wilkes did the New Hampshire FEW and took a much needed vacation/time with the family).  That week consisted of feeding goats, ducks, chickens and turkeys as well as feeding, working with and Jordon  running Liberty’s energy out!  Of course, there was time for enjoying a good book from the Wilkes team library!  There was time outside running in the field, playing games, reading to younger children, cutting the front yard, and sitting outside on the bench in the butterfly garden to bask in the warm sun!  Don’t forget, that before the temperature turned cooler, we also had the opportunity to enjoy one another’s company as we took the last swim for the summer in the pool at the farmhouse!  Now…..let’s go into more detail.

A Date with the Wilkes:  The days went something like this.

We pulled into the driveway which was strangely quiet except for the lone cat wandering around the property, a dog sitting on it’s haunches in her pen,  chickens wandering contentedly around their pen (as well as the turkeys) and goats looking inquiringly at us.  Since everything was in order, we left for the farmhouse to set up and purchase food for the week.

Later, we came back to the Barn to check and feed all the animals.

It’s time to get up, we have to go feed the animal’s. So off to feed the animals. We pulled up in the driveway and the animals were so happy to see us ( at least I think they were ).  Quickly we fed them and headed back to the house to eat. Later we checked them again between lunch and dinner.  The next few days ran pretty much the same, except for garage door problem day, electric fence problem day and car problems day.

Mr. Thrash was able to come by and help us fix the garage door problem, dad fixed the fence one and we took the van to the shop.

So thanks be to the Lord for keeping us safe while we were watching the Wilkes property.  Thank God they didn’t run away while the fence was not on.

Thanks Wilkes Team

We understand so little

We understand so little,

We do not see God’s hand;

Working in our lives,

to form a bigger plan.

We understand so little,

We don’t understand why;

God could let (this) happen,

But, He says “I’ll show you, by and by.

We understand so little;

like on the cross Christ lay.

Why did this happen?

Because it was God’s way!

We understand so little

yet we ask: -

“Why do we have to run this race?”

But, I think it will be worth it all

When we see Him face to face

We understand so little

“Why is life so hard?”;

But these are questions from the tempter

So, be on your guard!

We understand so little

But, God knows all things.

We just have to trust Him

and, oh!, the blessings it brings!

We understand so little,

So let’s just look through God’s eyes;

Because then it will be all glory,

When we see Him in the skies!

Two days of Tons of fun

Here’s some highlights from a couple of weeks ago….After all, it’s about time for a new post, right?!! Smile      DSCN0244

It was a bright and beautiful Thursday. A perfect day for…..What? Hmmm…. Smile The night before four people had been making plans. Hmmm…..I wonder what they were?, ……….It was time to visit the, (drum roll please)the……. Wilkes!!!! SmileDSCN0257

Yes, it was time to visit our dear friends the Wilkes. But, since we didn’t need to be there until 2:00 p.m., Dad had a secret plan for the family. “Why not visit Grandpa?” was the thought that he had. We hadn’t eaten lunch, so we decided to visit the China Buffet and Sushi Bar which Elijah pronounced as RSCN0298Buffet with the “t” on the end and Sashi instead of Sushi! What a young, enthusiastic reader, even if there are some pronunciation skills that need to be sharpened!Winking smileDSCN0284

So, after a good meal and a family memory later, ….Smilewe were headed to the Wilkes team’s land!

On the way to the Wilkes Barn, we were talking in the car about Joshua and Lisa and their house. Most of us had not seen their house since they had painted and put furniture into it and thought it would be neat to drop by and see them. Seconds after we had said that, Elijah shouted RSCN0293“There’s Joshua and Lisa!”(great timing!) Winking smilethey had Stopped at a Plant nursery, so we turn around the van to say “Hello”and BTW,It took longer to say”Hello”,than we though it would!!!Smile

So…, then we went to the Wilkes team land. When we arrived at the Wilkes, we found that they had a new baby goat to care for as well as a Mama goat named Honey in the field. We saw their new dog , and talked with the Wilkes that were home at the time. We were waiting for Jenny and Mr. Wilkes to arrive before we could go to the Christmas Tree Farm for a tour.DSCN0256 We found out that Mark Wilkes is interested in a tree farm(in the future ) so that was one reason for our tour of the farm!Smile

After our tour of the farm, we had a delicious meal at the Wilkes house followed by a delectable dish of ice cream! Who doesn’t like ice cream?! Winking smile after a full day of chatting, goat petting, dog walking, game playing, eating and ice cream, we headed back to the Johnson home.Smile

FSCN0349On Friday, we went to another dear friend of ours, the Prestons. They invited us for a delicious taco mexican style dinner. Mmmmmm……refried beans, homemade guacamole, and all the fixings to go with it! We had fun talking, and talking and, oh yes, more talking! (Some of the Johnsons really like to talk, we won’t say who!) Winking smile

Mr. Preston made popcorn for us all,and made us work as a team to cleanup the mess (you know how popcorn is rather messy not to mention kids and Mr. Preston can’t stand a mess at all ,to say the lest!!) Smile

So to sum it all up,we had a great week!!!Smile

Happy Birthday Hope

Manassas, Virginia Retirement and Assisted Living Community

We visit the home as a family because  Uncle Paul is there right now.  We have found that whenever we go there, we bring joy not only to Paul but to the other residents of the home.  We had visited in February, and at the end of the visit as we were almost ready to go to Uncle Paul’s room, Hope talked to two of the ladies at the front of the home.  She told them she had a birthday coming up, and in the course of the conversation, they desired to be part of her birthday celebration.  When I talked to my father-in-law about it (who is Uncle Paul’s brother), he thought it would be a good idea to purchase a cake, bring it to the home, and share it with anyone who might like some.IMG_3896

Well, that is exactly what we did!  March 9th was here before we knew it.  IMG_3894We ordered a very tasty cake from Costco, bought some plates and spoons, and then went to the home.  Uncle Paul was so thrilled that we decided to share Hope’s birthday with him!  Christina scratched his back and loved on him, Jonathan went to one of the ladies named Maxine and hugged her for a while, and all the children helped us pass out cake to any of the residents who wanted some!  We were even able to share some cake with some of the staff who were willing to partake.  We met Paul’s special “girlfriend” who I ran after to ask if she wanted cake before  she left.  IMG_3898She asked me if I was trying to make her fat, which made me kind of chuckle to myself.  Before she left, she told us to come back and see her again and told us that she was glad that we came!

Elijah talked with a lady that had a book in her hand  that sat at the front near the light and the table.  She said that it was nice to talk with people, but if you didn’t have someone to talk with that a book is your friend!  How true that is, especially if your friend is the Bible!  She found it very easy to talk to Elijah and told me that he was a “good little talker!” IMG_3899IMG_3900IMG_3901

IMG_3908IMG_3902The one lady that I mentioned previously, named Maxine, really didn’t want us to go!  We went over to the pictures that were posted on the bulletin board, IMG_3904and she came over to see us.  She gave us her necklace, IMG_3905which I told her we would bring back to her when we came to visit again.  She hugged and kissed on our children as if they were her very own grandchildren!  How thankful we are to have children that love people and are kind to them just like Jesus is with us! IMG_3909

It was also good that Hope joyfully gave herself to serving others on her special day.  Uncle Paul blessed her by saying that her presence on her special day made that day “his” special day!  He followed us out to the car as we left and really didn’t want us to go.  We kissed and hugged him a couple of times and told him that we loved him.  I know we will all look forward to the next time we may see him and anyone else who is willing!  “By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if you have love one to another.”  John 13:35

A Special Commitment

Have you ever made a commitment before?  Was it life changing?  A month ago yesterday I made a commitment with God and my family to stay pure until God brings the one HE’s chosen for me into my life.  This is a very serious thing.  Today, in our world, it is very hard to maintain purity.IMG_3709  The world has so many temptations, evil thoughts, pictures etc. that can defile you.  I thank God that HE has given me godly parents that have kept me from these evil things and are step by step helping me prepare for marriage.IMG_3711

Back in the Bible time young ladies had a hard time maintaining purity.  It’s nice  to know we’re not alone!!(:  We can read about different young ladies that had their purity defiled, we use this as an encouragement to do what’s right.  In Genesis 34:1 we read “And Dinah, the daughter of Leah, which she bear unto Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land.”  IMG_3713This is where she made her mistake-BIG mistake!  If she had stayed under her father’s umbrella of protection and if Jacob had fulfilled his God-given responsibility to teach and protect her, there’s a high probability that Dinah wouldn’t have been defiled (See Genesis 34:1-31).  May we willingly choose to stay under the proper authority until the proper time!IMG_3715

Also we read in 2 Samuel 13:1 that  David had a daughter named Tamar who was also defiled by her half-brother Amnon  (See II Samuel 13:1-20). Again we are reminded to keep ourselves pure!  In Proverbs 31:3  Solomon’s mother (Bathsheba) warned Solomon of strange women.  “Give not thy strength unto strange women…..and unto strange women shalt thou not go.”  Even though this is given to a man it is just as important for us women to not become that “strange women!”

IMG_3716Dad gave me an illustration one day.  He said “What if you had a life like one of those girls you see out there in the world.  You flirted, kissed, hugged, paired up, broke up, paired up, broke up and had relationships with many different men.  Meanwhile, you have given pieces of your heart away to these different men.  IMG_3717Then one day you meet the one you’re supposed to marry.  How would he feel when all you have to give him is just one little piece of your heart?  I t would not mean much to him nor to you when you have defiled yourself and only have a little piece left for him.”  My purpose is to give my whole heart and my first kiss as well because it is the right thing to do!  Wow, what a lot to think about!

So, on January 8, 2012, I made a commitment before God and my family to stay pure until marriage.  I said the following words from memory:

This ring stands for purity.  I make this promise between God, my parents and me.

To keep me on a path of righteousness

So your plan I will see.

I know you have a special person for me,

My one true love,

To whom you have chosen

and sent from above.

This person I will wait for

Because it is Your Heavenly Will.

Until that day

When he makes my heart stand still.

This is the promise I make

With the help of You, LORD, and my family

I know that when I succeed

My blessing will be plenty.

IMG_3718The ring that Dad gave me has a silver heart with a red charm in the middle.  The red charm is like a ruby and the ruby is God’s precious jewel just like I am precious to God.  God compares a virtuous woman to a ruby (Proverbs 31:10). The heart is a symbol of a pure heart.  “Blessed are the pure in heart……” Matt. 5:8  and  “the King’s Daughter is all glorious within….” Psalms 46:13.  You are the King’s Daughter and you can not remain that way by yourself, but with God’s help stay pure in heart!

In closing I would like to share my Grandma’s exhortation to me:IMG_3726IMG_3725IMG_3710

Dear Christina,

When your Dad told me you were making a “Purity Commitment” this Sunday, January 8th, I decided to write a few thoughts down to you, with the hope, you will take them to heart.  I am very proud of you and encouraged by your decision to make this commitment to the LORD.

IMG_3721In II Kings 2 :9, Elisha asked God, “that a double portion of Elijah’s spirit be upon him.”  This was a bold request, but God granted it.  Why?  Because Elisha’s motives were pure.  His main goal was not to be better or more powerful than Elijah, but to accomplish more for God.  When our motives are pure, we don’t have to be afraid to ask great things of God.

Psalms 119:9 says “Wherewithal shall a young man(woman) cleanse his (her) way?  By taking heed thereto according to the Word.  In other words, by reading God’s word and doing what it says.

In Matthew 23:24, Jesus said “Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel.”  Jesus was condemning the Pharisees and religious leaders for appearing saintly and holy outwardly, but inwardly remaining full of corruption and greed.  If our Christianity is merely a show for others, it’s like washing a cup on the outside only.  When we are clean or pure on the inside our cleanliness won’t be a sham or fake.

In John 17:17, Jesus said “Sanctify them through thy truth, they Word is truth.”  Jesus was referring to His disciples in this verse, but it applies to us today, just the same.  A follower of Christ becomes sanctified (meaning set apart for sacred use, cleansed and made holy, by believing and obeying God’s Word.  Daily application of God’s Word has a purifying effect on our minds and hearts.  It points our sin in our lives, and guides us back to the right path.IMG_3724

In today’s world, it is harder than ever to maintain purity in our lives.  My prayer for you, Christina, is that you stay as close to God, throughout your life, as you can.  By believing and staying in God’s Word, obeying Him, and believing in His promises, no matter  what your circumstances are, at the time.  Always remember, you will never go wrong, if you follow what’s right, in God’s sight.  Listen to your parents, obey them.  They love you and have your best interest at heart, and never be afraid to go to them, to seek their counsel with any problem or concern you have.  Next to God, they love you more than anyone.  Your grandmother also loves you very much, and prays God will bless you always, and help you keep your commitment to Him, in all things.

Proverbs 3:5-7

                                                                                       Love always,

                                                                                       Grandmother

Lastly, some books that have encouraged me, and may encourage you:

“The Duggars : 20 and Counting” by Michelle and Jim-Bob Duggar

It may also help to have a list of what you want to have in a future husband and always send those who may come to court you to see your Dad first!

Obedience is the KEY!

Three military men were standing on the deck of an aircraft carrier.  Suddenly their commanding officer spotted an approaching missile.  He shouted to them to “drop”.  Two of the men did, but the third one looked around to see what the problem was.  Just as he turned, the missile struck and killed him.   If you think of this, he could have obeyed and not had instant death.  This account shows two ways of obeying.

The first is the Greek approach.  That is to understand first and then obey.  The soldier who turned around wanted to know why he should drop and then he would obey.  This lead him to an immediate end.

The second is the Hebrew model.  Obey first, understand later.  This is the method that God used with Abraham when he asked him to leave his homeland and also to take his  son’s life.

In the case of wood ducks, they demonstrate the Hebrew model.  When it is time to leave the nest, they have to jump down from  a nest that is high up in a tree.  One such occasion, all the ducks but one obeyed.   He didn’t want to leave the nest because he was afraid of perishing from the fall so instead he perished in the abandoned nest.  Obedience is the very best way!

Of  course, it is hard to obey first, ask later.  But, God says in His WORD that we must obey, so…how about practicing it at home?

Here’s a test…..

1.  Do you obey regardless of what you are told to do?

2.  Do you ask for reasons when your request is denied?

3.  Do you obey immediately when told?

4.  You may do it, but do you do it with a smile?

5.  Do you give reason to not obey when told to?

6.  Have you been reminded to do the task right?

7.   Have you had to do the task twice?

8.  Do you ask one parent after the other said “NO”?

9.   While you are doing work , do you plan recreation?

10.  Do you ever think the job is stupid or worthless?

11.  Do you say “I know”, and run off before you know what the job  is?

12.  Does the parent have to have you repeat what they said because you weren’t listening?

“Obedience to God’s will is the secret of spiritual knowledge and insight.  It is not willingness to know but willingness to do God’s will that brings certainty.”                         Eric Liddell

The alternative to obedience is not freedom, but tyranny…..

So…………..do you need to work on your obedience?  I know I do!  This world we live in is failing and falling in so many places I see.  There is much disobedience and disrespect to parents, lawlessness, and more.  Let us be a light!!

Much of the information contained in this post is found in “The Power for True Success  How to build character in your life”  and is published by the Institute of  Basic Life  Principles, Inc.  The wording is changed in some areas, but I wanted to share this post about obedience and since it can be convicting to me and maybe a blessing to other readers.

Count your Blessings…….

Name them one by one…….. :) Our family has a pad that we write things down on that hangs on the refrigerator .  Well, every time we write on something on it (mostly food needs), you always see the title“Count your blessings.” (This is what caused me write this post :) )So, let’s do that!!IMG_0027

One huge blessing in my life is my family.  Now, some may say, “What, your family?!”  Why my family is always fighting or something and yet you enjoy your family?  Why, of course!  God made each family different, so we can grow in HIM and learn things as a family.  Some of our best times have been when we have been somewhere as a family.

One thing that God has been teaching me is to make your brothers and sisters your best friends.  It is not always easy, but your family will always be in your life whereas your friends may not always be.  Some of the people we knew back 2 or 3 years ago, we don’t even see most of them anymore and that just proves my point.  God placed us all in a family.  Each one of us he has a purpose and  a plan for, so He could make you a part of His clan!  So, as you’re growing in your family, your family is growing right along with you.  Just remember, God is in control!

Another thing that always made me feel like our family didn’t do anything fun, was when I would compare our family to other families because of what I heard  or saw them do something together.  But, when I had or have these feelings, I need to IMG_0131count my many blessings and remember the times we have spent together as a family.  It might be just one member of the family you can remember doing something with.   When we decide to do this, then we can be surprised at what the LORD has done.  So, count your many blessings name them one by one!!!! :)

“When upon life’s billows you are tempest tossed100_0083

When you are discouraged thinking all is lost  Count your many blessings name them one by one.  And it will surprise you what the LORD has done!”

Here’s a list that I came up with of suggestions on how you personally can come up with your own way to “count”or be a “blessing.” :)

1.  What blesses you most?  Is it encouraging words, someone singing or a nice note ?    Who usually is the one who blesses you?(a family member or friend)  Write down how this blessed you.

2.     Write down how many times your family has gone somewhere or done something together like a trip to the museum, state, country, or played a game, or surprised you on your birthday with silly string and water balloons (not mentioning any names here, like my own or anything-tee-hee).  :)   So, you get the idea, right?Johnson Family Easter 2010 4x6

3.  What were some blessings in disguise?  (Oh, that’s a hard one!)  How about leaving some friends you really liked but they weren’t edifying to you or helping you grow closer to the LORD?  What about times when you really want to do something your way but you obeyed and found out later that was the best thing for you to do because it was for your good and HIS glory?

4.  How are your parents a blessing to you; your sister(s), and or your brother(s)?  Write down how many times you can remember that they blessed you.

Now, how can you be a blessing?! :)

1.  Sing  a hymn or special song while you work.

2.  Encourage your family with a note or word of encouragement.  (My special favorite

is to write notes and hide them so that family members can find them later).

3.  Do something for someone like : the laundry, dishes, make a bed or two, clean up something for someone without their asking.

4.  Always be joyful!  This can go with being an encourager.  It has a definite effect on the family!

5.  Bless your Mom or Dad or both by your OBEDIENCE!IMG_2529

Remember that as I write this, I’m encouraging myself to do and be the same way!!  You can probably come up with more for this list, but here are a few things to start with!  If you are blessed by this post, I would love to hear from you!  It would greatly bless me!! :) (Get it!?)Also if you don’t think this is a good name for this post tell me.

A Costly Temper

This is a story we have and the meaning of it hit home to me.  I hope this will bless you!

A gentlemen had a servant who exasperated him because of his slow mind.  One day, when he was slower than usual, the angry master of the house threw a book at the servants head.   The servant ducked and the book flew out of the open window.

“Now, go pick that book up!” ordered the master.  The servant started to obey, but  a passerby had saved him the trouble, and had walked off with the book.  The scientist (for this was his occupation) thereupon began to wonder what book he had thrown away in his anger.  To his complete horror,  he discovered it was a quaint and rare book of mathematics which he had bought in London for fifty dollars.

But, his punishment was not yet complete.  The weeks went by and time had begun to ease his disappointment.  But, when strolling into a second-hand bookshop he perceived, to his great delight, a copy of the book he had lost.  Thereupon he asked the price.

” Well, “said the dealer reflectively, “I guess we can let you have it for forty dollars.  It’s a pretty rare book, and I dare-say I could get seventy five dollars for it by holding on  awhile.”

The man of science pulled out his wallet and produced the money, delighted at the opportunity of replacing his lost treasure.  When he reached home a card dropped out ot the leaves.  The card was his own, and further examintaion showed that he had merely bought back his own property.

“Forty dollars’ worth of temper!  Huh!  I think I shall mend my ways!”  he was overheard to say.

A Day with the Wilkes

The Wilkes are a huge blessing to us. We are encouraged by their zeal for Christ and their testimony and desire to live their lives so Christ shines through them.

A couple of days before Thanksgiving we had the privilege of spending two days with them, we helped out  at their growing barn, met their new chickens and chased them around.  I’m sure the chickens couldn’t wait until we left them alone.  Get it! DSCF0074

The ladies stayed at the I like chickenshouse to help out, while the men worked on the barn. It was encouraging to drive up with lunch and see the men hard at work  IMG_1470

We had time later to sit down around the table and have an early Thanksgiving dinner with them.  They taught us a new tradition about the Pilgrims and the 5 pieces of corn.   We also ate until we where stuffed just like a turkey.

Later; Jenny did Corissa and Hopes hair – much to their delight and we had the opportunity to see the grand piano arrive.   I know their home will bring much joy and music to them and others.

I finished up the day at my grandmothers house where she and I made two chocolate pies, coleslaw and jello salad.  Sweet!Grandmas helper

I want to say a big thank you to the Wilkes & Grandmother for a wonderful time of fellowship.

Giving thanks to God always for you all, making mention of you in our prayers.
